چکیده

The usage of cost-efficient and dynamically adaptable commodity PC hardware instead of specialized networking hardware has aroused strong interest in software routers. Testbed measurements as well as modeling and simulations of such system are important methodologies for finding bottlenecks in the packet processing to predict and optimize the performance. In this paper, we investigate the impact of the number of network cards with respect to the software router performance. We predict the performance of software routers based on a validated model which we obtain from real testbed measurements. Keywords— commodity hardware; packet processing; resource contention; network card; simulation model; ns-3; Linux NAPI

Congestion estimation of router input ports in Network-on-Chip for efficient virtual allocation

Effective and congestion-aware routing is vital to the performance of network-on-chip. The efficient routing algorithm undoubtedly relies on the considered selection strategy. If the routing function returns a number of more than one permissible output ports, a selection function is exploited to choose the best output port to reduce packets latency. In this paper, we introduce a new selection s...

Data Plane Optimization in Open Virtual Routers

A major challenge in network virtualization is to virtualize the components constituting the network, in particular the routers. In the work presented here, we focus on how to use open source Linux software in combination with commodity hardware to build open virtual routers. A general approach in open router virtualization is to run multiple virtual instances in parallel on the same PC hardwar...

Energy-Efficient Opaque IP over WDM Networks with Survivability and Security Constraints

Mixed deployment of sleep-enabled and non-sleep-enabled router cards is suggested at each node of an IP over WDM network along with survivability and security constraints. This is used to design a green network which is observed to reduce energy consumption (by up to 28% for an example network) compared to a network where the router cards are not sleep-enabled. OCIS codes: (060.4250) Networks; ...

Towards Low Latency Software Routers

Network devices based on commodity hardware are capable of high-speed packet processing while maintaining the programmability and extensibility of software. Thus, software-based network devices, like software routers, software-based firewalls, or monitoring systems, constitute a cost-efficient and flexible alternative to expensive, special purpose hardware. The overall packet processing perform...

Design of a Low-Latency Router Based on Virtual Output Queuing and Bypass Channels for Wireless Network-on-Chip

Wireless network-on-chip (WiNoC) is considered as a novel approach for designing future multi-core systems. In WiNoCs, wireless routers (WRs) utilize high-bandwidth wireless links to reduce the transmission delay between the long distance nodes. When the network traffic loads increase, a large number of packets will be sent into the wired and wireless links and can...
